Zu diesem Roman

From the best-selling author of Love's Executioner comes a riveting blend of fact and fiction, a drama of love, fate, and will, played out against the intellectual ferment of nineteenth-century Vienna on the eve of the birth of psychoanalysis.

An extraordinary patient. . . a gifted healer who is himself in pain . . . a secret pact. These are the elements that combine to create this unforgettable saga of an imagined relationship between Europe's greatest philosopher and one of the founding fathers of psychoanalysis.
The story begins with a daunting request. The eminent physician Josef Breuer is asked by Lou Salome to treat Friedrich Nietzsche's suicidal despair after the end of their love affair. A difficult task under any circumstances, but virtually impossible in the days when the medical profession did not consider common human misery to fall within its domain. Breuer has one distinct advantage: He understands Nietzsche's suffering only too well, for he himself suffers from the same form of despair. He devises an ingenious plan, using his experimental "talking cure." But in an ironic twist, the doctor discovers as he gets to know this dark and lonely genius that he can be a healer only by allowing Nietzsche to heal him.

As the story unfolds, we see a relationship begotten in duplicity and manipulation evolve into a friendship that becomes powerfully redemptive for both men. Yalom brings to life not only Nietzsche and Breuer but also Lou Salome, "Anna O.," and a young medical intern named Sigmund Freud.
