In The Black Eye setzt Michal Chelbin ihre Reise durch die Welt von Athleten aus Osteuropa, Israel und England fort. Die Fotos der Wrestler dieser Serie zeigen starke Kontraste: Jugend und Männlichkeit, Stärke und Schwäche, Zartheit und Unnachgiebigkeit, seltsam und gewöhnlich, Glanz und Rauhheit.

Präsentiert in einem klaren und ausgeglichenem Format, scheinen die Bilder den Betrachter durch ihre Mehrdeutigkeit herauszufordern.

Die Fotos zeigen wenig vom tatsächlichen Leben der Sportler, machen aber trotzdem ein inneres Drama deutlich, in dem sie die Spannung zwischen dem Blick und der Präsenz des jeweiligen Individuums wiedergeben. Die jungen Athleten sind nach hartem Training oder einem Kampf erschöpft. Einige sind ausser Atem, sie schwitzen, sind müde. Chelbin sucht nach dem speziellen Ausdruck, wenn ihr Atem sich fast wieder beruhigt hat, aber sie noch nicht wieder vollständig zu sich selbst zurück gekehrt sind. Das ist der Moment, in dem sie die Maske abnehmen und sich der Kamera ergeben, wenn sie versucht den Zwiespalt aufzuzeigen, zwischen der Rolle des Kämpfers und der Person dahinter.

While revealing little about the lives of Chelbin’s subjects, the photos do reveal an internal drama, capturing a tension between the gaze and the presence of each individual. These athletes are exhausted after a hard training session or fight. Some are breathless, sweaty, and fatigued. Chelbin searches for a certain expression in which they have almost calmed their breath but not yet fully regained their self-awareness. It is a moment when they have lifted their mask and surrendered to the camera.
